May 5: Bear Swamp Road River Clean-Up

After Hurricane Irene hit Mahwah last year, an unprecedented amount of damage was done to our town as well as surrounding communities. Unfortunately, some of this damage persists throughout the area. On Bear Swamp Road off of Route 202 (Ramapo Valley Road), asphalt that was swept away by flooding sits in a stream that branches from the Ramapo River, polluting the river’s ecosystem. MEVO will be teaming up with the Mahwah Department of Public Works to remove this environmentally hazardous waste from the stream. After the asphalt is collected, the Mahwah DPW will recycle it so it can be reused and finally placed where it should be: back on the roads! MEVO Earth Crew volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah, NJ at 8 AM on Saturday May 5th and will carpool to Bear Swamp Road. We will finish with the clean-up around 1 PM. Please wear boots to the event as well as clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. All proper supplies will be provided, including a free lunch complements of the Mahwah DPW. To RSVP for this event, simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number, and the subject line “Bear Swamp Road Stream Clean-up,” or call 201-566-6916. You can also RSVP on Facebook.
