January 15: Farm Apprentice Meeting

What: Educational – Teaching basic design philosophies based on permaculture principles. We discuss some examples and ideas that we would like to implement. Open discussion – Brainstorming ideas for the farm, hearing people’s inputs, and discussing different ways people can get involved.
Where: Bergen Community College MAIN C-309
When: Wednesday, January 15th @ 5:30PM – 7:30PM
Why: To ground break the design process for the 1 acre farm Bergen County Educational Farm. It is an open meeting to anyone who is interested in becoming an apprentice farmer or a volunteer for this upcoming spring or who would just like to learn about the design process.
Bring: Notebook and/or laptop!

December 25: Hike of the Month

What: A relaxing yet active hike at Mahwah’s one and only Ramapo Reservation!
Where: Ramapo Reservation (610 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ)
When: Saturday, December 21st @ 10:30am (Be prepared to hike for approximately 2 hours!)
Why: To appreciate and enjoy the well-maintained public parks space that Mahwah takes great pride in!
Bring: Boots, thick clothes, a snack, and water!

November 23: Building the Bee Apiary

What: Prepping the location for the future MEVO Bee Apiary
Where: 400 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ (Bergen Community College) behind Ender Hall by the child development center parking lot
When: Saturday, November 23 @ 10:00 AM (be prepared to work 4-6 hours)
Why: To remove weeds, level the location, put down sheet mulch and ensure we have a location ready for our bee hive installation in March

November 16: Catherine Ave Restoration

What: Trash cleanup of a vacant lot and site of future community garden
Where: Catherine Ave, Mahwah, NJ (at the end of the street)
When: Saturday, November 16 @ 10:00 AM (be prepared to work 4-6 hours)
Why: To clean up this heavily polluted site and put it to use to benefit the community

October 26: Tree Planting

The East Jersey Trout Unlimited has invited MEVO’s amazing volunteers to help with a major stream restoration project! Stream restoration is an important process to return a stream into its natural and healthy state. Our duty as environmental volunteers will be to plant various trees and shrubs along the water. It will be a fun day of gardening and working hard! At the end of the event you will feel spectacular because you helped a stream! Car pooling is necessary and vital! If you are willing to help transport volunteers with your car, please let us know! The event will be held in Demarest and we will carpool there from the Ramapo Reservation. October 19: Catherine Avenue Restoration

Once again, MEVO is proud to continue the long series of infamous Catherine Avenue cleanups! This abandoned lot still has tons of trash that must be eradicated before it can be used as a proper open space. In the past, MEVO has found car parts, a shopping cart, the roof of the house, an oven, motors, and much much more! We will be revisiting the location again at 10AM and work until 2PM. Bring clothes that you do not mind getting dirty as well as water! We will be providing the gloves and tools for everyone to use. Hope to see you guys there! October 12: Mahwah Parks Day

The Mahwah Environmental Commission will be hosting its first-ever Mahwah Parks Day! This day is dedicated to promoting and using Mahwah’s open town spaces and we are going to actively participate! MEVO will be having a hike at the Ramapo Valley Reservation. In addition, we will carrying trash and recycling bags to collect any litter we see on the ground using garbage pickers. It will be a great way to enjoy and clean the reservation. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Reservation Entrance at 11 AM where the large map is. The event will end around 1:30PM. We recommend bringing water and some snacks if you get hungry! July 20: Catherine Ave Restoration

There is a vacant lot located at the end of Catherine Ave in Mahwah, NJ where an abandoned house once stood. Though the house is destroyed and gone, debris, discarded furniture and miscellaneous trash is littered throughout the property. Over the past few months, MEVO had numerous events cleaning up the garbage in preparation to return this lot to the environment. However, the work is not done as there is still material that needs to be removed. Join us at Catherine Ave in Mahwah, NJ from 10:30 AM until 2:30 PM. July 17: Invasive Species Removal

Looking to help the environment but Saturdays aren’t a good day for you? Next Wednesday, volunteers will be removing various invasive species that plague Mahwah’s environment. If we don’t take them out they will continue to overgrow since they have no natural inhibitor. We will meet at Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah NJ, which is on Route 202. The event will begin at 10:00 AM and go until 2:00 PM. Wear clothes that you can get dirty and bring lots of water! Eat a big breakfast before coming, we have a lot of work to do!
