Site Is Under Construction!

As 2010 came to an end, and 2011 had begun, MEVO became far more profound in our work. We now currently have over 900 of you amazing volunteers, and are in the process of establishing eight chapters across the state of New Jersey. Additionally, a new type of environmental philosophy and strategy has been created by Graham Starr and Eric J. Fuchs-Stengel, which captures the essence of what it really means to be eco-conscious and to be part of MEVO.

As MEVO expands and continues down the road of worldwide impact, we still must continue with the changes we have been making for the past year. Namely, our website and information needs to be revamped so that we may conform to the general requirements and necessary actions of a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit.

Basically, we’re making the website AWESOME!

What’s going on with MEVO at the start of 2011?

Well, volunteers, we recently have received a very generous donation of 33 RECYCLING BINS! These bins will help get the word out there to recycle, as well as to help with our cleanups and partner events.

Additionally, MEVO. is on its way to educate the population on popular recycling techniques, as well as conservation methods to create a better and brighter tomorrow for our natural and sustainable planet. “But what can I do to help?” you may be asking yourself. Well, you can always help this planet by recycling all paper, plastic, metal, and glass, and by picking up litter you happen to see. “But MEVO! I work/go to school in a place that doesn’t have convenient recycling bins! What do I do?” Well, you can always simply take the bottles or cans with you, crush them up and store them in a backpack or pocket, and just wait until you get to some earth-friendly location (i.e. home, other building, etc.). Remember to recycle plastic bags when you’re done with them; don’t just throw them away. Almost everything can be reused.

Also, be sure to tell others the proper methods of recycling. If you catch someone about to throw out a water bottle, tell them to recycle it. Be persistent. This is only the first step in saving this beautiful planet and making this world a better place with a brighter future.

You can also help out by attending one of our Volunteer Events. Feel like recycling isn’t enough? Come clean up with MEVO or join in any of our various other environmental activities!

Saturday, January 29th : Clean-Up!

Volunteers interested can attend one of M.E.V.O.’s staple events: A CLEAN-UP! The details as to the time and location are not yet defined and subject to change, due to bureaucratic and weather conditions; however, the clean-up will most likely occur off of Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah, NJ and Ramsey, NJ. We will most likely meet on a designated site at around 9 a.m., so be sure to come prepared with lots of water, lunch, and clothes appropriate for the weather that you don’t mind getting very dirty. We should be done with all our work by 4 p.m. If interested in attending, send an email to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with your name, age, and phone number, and the subject “January Cleanup.” Advanced details on the event, with all proper and pertinent information, will be given in the near future, so look out for that email!

If you have any questions or concerns about volunteer events, feel free to call (201) 637-0522

Remember, all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Sunday, January 23rd : Let’s Decorate!

Thanks to the generous donation of 33 RECYCLING BINS, M.E.V.O. is all set to do some terrific work. However, these bins are colorless, and just look like wooden buckets. To be frank, they’re boring, and we need to make sure they scream “RECYCLING,” so all volunteers interested will be invited to a central location to paint these buckets and get this show on the road, so to speak! All paints and buckets will be supplied, all you need to bring is artistic ability and a smile. Everyone is welcome to attend, and artists are encouraged to attend. If interested in stopping by to help out, send an email to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with your name, age, and phone number, and the subject “Recycle Bins” and we will send you the details on when and where to go.

If you have any questions or concerns about volunteer events, feel free to call (201) 637-0522

August 14th: Trail Restoration

Once again, M.E.V.O. will be volunteering with The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference to help restore damaged hiking trail land at Bear Mountain State Park, in Bear Mountain, New York. After the recent reroute of the Appalachian Trail (AT) at Bear Mountain, there is still work to be done to repair the soil erosion on the closed sections of the old AT. We will be installing check dams and covering over the old trail with natural organic features.  Please keep in mind that the work we will be doing is very arduous and strenuous, and the physical labor will be very tiring. We will be carpooling to this event to reduce CO2 emissions (fewer cars = less CO2). Please be sure to wear boots, jeans, and clothes you can get dirty. Bring lots of water and lunch, as we will be working well into the day. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation (a.k.a. “The Res”) parking lot in Mahwah, NJ at 8:00 a.m., and carpool to Bear Mountain from there.  We will be back in Mahwah at 5:00 p.m. If you want to lend a helping hand, then send an e-mail to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with your name, age, and phone number.
