There is a foreign menace in our soil. And it is called a barberry bush. Surprised? Barberry bushes are popular because they are a low maintenance, shade-tolerant, and drought resistant plant, but DON’T be fooled. Barberry bushes are actually invasive plant species that alter soil pH, nitrogen levels, and biological activity—a recipe that drives out native species both plant and animal, by displacing native plans and reducing wildlife habitat and forage. We must put an end to this destructive force! This Saturday at 9 am MEVO will meet at the Ramapo Reservation to carpool at Bear Mountain. We will remove the barberry bushes. Join us in doing so.
