June 29: Stag Hill Cleanup

Because our work at Highlands Meadow is postponed until further notice, we thought it would be a great opportunity to kickoff the summer with a cleanup in our own town of Mahwah. Stag Hill is located in our own town of Mahwah, NJ. Tires and other trash have been dumped here illegally for decades and this pollution is extremely harmful to the town’s ecosystem. Let’s spend some time this summer cleaning up Stag Hill and making Mahwah and even cleaner town. We will meet at Ramapo Reservation on 202 at 10:30 am on Saturday morning. From there, we will carpool to our location on Stag Hill where the cleanup will take place. All tools and gloves will be provided but we urge you to bring water. For questions, email Brianna Sheahan at brianna@mevoearth.org or call 201-316-4888. To RSVP, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line of “June 29 Stag Hill.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

June 22: Catherine Ave Round 2

Catherine Avenue is heavily polluted but we believe after cleaning it up in Round 2 we should be able to start preparing for a tree planting on the site. It is highly recommended you come prepared wearing clothes you can get dirty: work boots and a pair of gloves. In addition, bring lunch and lots of water. We will be cleaning-up rain or shine. We will meet at 10:30 AM at the end of Catherine Avenue in Mahwah, New Jersey 07430. The trash clean-up will go from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. For questions, email Brianna Sheahan at brianna@mevoearth.org or call 201-316-4888. To RSVP, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “June 22nd Catherine Avenue.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

June 17: Catherine Avenue Restoration

Where a deserted house once stood, there is now a vacant lot filled with a significant amount of trash and debris that needs to be removed. Not only is this garbage covered lot an eyesore to the local residents, it can be converted to forest area once all of the trash is gone. This will take several cleanups to rid this area of all of the waste and recyclables, but once that is done MEVO can work on restoring greenery to this area. It is highly recommended you come prepared wearing clothes you can get dirty: work boots and a pair of gloves. In addition, bring lunch, lots of water and a rain poncho. We may be getting little showers. We will be cleaning-up rain or shine. We will meet at 9:30 AM at the end of Catherine Avenue in Mahwah, New Jersey 07430. The trash clean-up will go from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. For questions, email Brianna Sheahan at brianna@mevoearth.org or call 201-316-4888. To RSVP, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line of “June 17 Catherine Avenue.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

June 15: Weed Removal

MEVO will be working with our friends from the NJ Botanical Gardens again, but this time in Mahwah. We will be removing a great amount of weeds that are cropping on Moffatt Road and the nearby cemetery. This will definitely make the area more attractive and the cemetery easily accessible. We will be meeting at Moffatt Road in Mahwah NJ at 10 AM and will work until 1 PM. Bring water to stay hydrated and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Also, we recommend wearing long sleeves and pants because of the chance of poison ivy. Gloves will be provided. For questions, email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. To RSVP, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Moffatt Road.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

June 8: Ramapo Reservation Trail Work

MEVO will be working with the Bear Claw Trail Crew to restore trails at Mahwah’s Ramapo Reservation. Steps at the entrance to the Reservation’s trails have eroded and are dangerous in the winter’s icy conditions. New steps have recently been put in, so now we’re going to surface the steps with stone. We’ll also line the pathway from the parking lot with geo-textile fabric and stone. Finally we’ll build a drainage ditch and remediate the erosion issues at the sides of the steps. We’re meeting at Ramapo Reservation at 9:30 AM and should finish around 2 PM. Wear old clothes and bring water. Gloves and all tools will be provided. For questions, email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. To RSVP, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Reservation Trail Work.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

May 25: Trail Construction

In March, MEVO volunteers cleared out the Emerson trail of garbage. Now it’s time to begin carving out this trail. We will be moving and cutting out logs and placing water barks to stop erosion. The trail is already evident, but it needs some work to be easier to walk on and become more appealing to the eye. For instance, there is a rusty fence that may need to be cut. This work will definitely payoff when Emerson has a redefined nature trail for the townspeople to walk through. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Reservation at 10:00 AM and will probably be working until 2:30 PM. We definitely advise you to bring water and some clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. For questions, you can email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. To RSVP for any of these events, simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Emerson Trail Work.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

May 11: Invasive Plants Removal

Garlic mustard is cropping up under the shrub border along the Garden’s main Avenue of the Botanical Gardens. Our MEVO volunteers will be working to remove the invasive plants. Not only will this project help control an invasive weed, it will also make the main drag much more attractive for the tons of visitors this time of year. Come out for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy making the botanical garden an even more beautiful place! We will meet at the Ramapo Reservation at 2:00 PM and then commute to the New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood, NJ. Bring water to stay hydrated and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The event will be over about 5:00 PM. For questions, you can email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. April 27: Earth Day Event

Catherine Ave, a street in Mahwah has vacant filled with garbage and debris. MEVO now has the opportunity to restore to its environmental roots. A house once stood here, and though it is gone, it’s wreckage remains. We have already done one cleanup here, but in order to be ready to have trees planted on it this Summer, the lot still needs a lot more work! Let’s celebrate this past Earth Day by making Mahwah a better place! We will be meeting at Catherine Ave in Mahwah NJ. at 11:00am and we will finish up before 2:00pm. Gloves and tools will be supplied and as always, we encourage you to wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. For questions, you can email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. To RSVP for this event, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Catherine Ave Cleanup.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

April 20: Stag Hill Cleanup

We will continue our efforts to cleanup up Stag Hill on this day. There is more than an abundance of tires and other trash that have been illegally dumped in MEVO’s very own town. Let’s make Mahwah and our world a cleaner place by going up to Stag Hill to remove some of this pollution. Now that the weather is warmer and the snow has melted, it will be much easier to locate and take out this trash. The weather this time of year is very unpredictable, so dress accordingly and we recommend you wear boots because it can be quite muddy. Gloves and trash pickers will be supplied. We will meet at Ramapo Reservation at 11am and commute to Stag Hill from there. We will be back down before 2:00pm. For questions, you can email David at davidjaychoi@mevoearth.org or call 201- 916-4530. To RSVP for this event, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Stag Hill Cleanup.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.
