December 1: Recycling Bin Creation

We will once again be creating our amazing, innovative recycling bins, which will then be distributed to various businesses, schools, and households throughout the community! Come out and join us as we turn would-be discarded shipping containers into beautiful, colorful recycling bins. We will meet and be working at MEVO’s headquarters at Mahwah Department of Public Works in Mahwah, NJ at 142 North Railroad Avenue. We will start painting at 10 AM, and should be done by 1 PM! Please note that we use fairly strong paint on our bins, and if you get it on your clothes, it will not come out! So please, wear old clothes you don’t mind getting a little MEVO green and blue! Also, it will be chilly out as winter is approaching and although we will most likely be working inside, please wear warm clothes to the event! You are welcome to bring food and water, but if you forget, we will provide it for you! We hope to see you all there! If you have any questions, email Alex at azhang@mevoearth.org or call 917-456-2826. To RSVP for this event simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number, and the subject line “Recycling Bin Creation.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

November 17: West Airmont Ave Trash Clean-Up

We will once again be participating in one of our classic clean-ups! This time we are taking our trash-pickers and garbage bags to West Airmont Avenue in Mahwah, NJ. One of MEVO’s own members Pete has introduced us to areas around his house littered with bottles, wrappers, and juice packs and much more. This trash has accumulated over time by the stream due to neglect. Have No Fear, MEVO has a Solution! On Saturday, November 17th, come join MEVO as we help out one of our own in cleaning up his street! We will meet at 49 West Airmont Ave at 10:30 AM and will complete our work by around 2 to 3 PM. Be prepared with clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty! We hope to see you then! If you have any questions, email Alex at azhang@mevoearth.org or call 917-456-2826. To RSVP for this event simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number, and the subject line “Trash Cleanup on Airmont Ave.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

November 10: Hurricane Sandy Donation Day

After Hurricane Sandy passed through the East Coast last week, Mahwah experienced relative hardship as a large percentage of Mahwah residents lost power and several are still without. In New Jersey, Sandy left thousands of people homeless and many more without power. With the Nor’Easter Athena making its way through New Jersey those without homes and electricity are in dire need of much needed supplies such as non-perishable food items, warm clothing and blankets, cleaning products, pet food, utility equipment like work gloves and other items. We will be meeting at 11 AM at The Mahwah Train Station on Ramapo Ave. We will be splitting up into pairs and going around town to see who will be willing to donate. Make sure to bring warm clothes and if you are able to drive it would be very helpful if you could also bring your car to help transport materials! We will be dropping off what has been donated at Mahwah Fire Department Company 2 on Island Rd. If you have any questions, email Alex at azhang@mevoearth.org or call 917-456-2826. To RSVP for this event simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number, and the subject line “Hurricane Sandy Donation Day.” You can also RSVP through our Facebook.

October 14: Invasive Species Removal

Come and join MEVO as we spend our day removing invasive plant species at Bear Mountain State Park in Stony Point, NY. We will be removing such invasives like Barberry Bushes and Garlic Mustard. If you’ve volunteered with us before, you’d be well aware that invasive plant species have been a huge problem in New Jersey. Invasive species such as the Garlic Mustard plant, which is native to only Europe, prevent native species from growing, causing a detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. Therefore, we need your help to make Bear Mountain State Park free of invasives to restore balance to the ecosystem. Volunteers should wear long sleeves and pants since the barberry bush has extremely sharp thorns. Also, it would be much appreciated if you can bring your own loppers and gardening scissors to clear out the invasive species. Volunteers will meet at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation at 9 AM to carpool and we should be completed with the work between 2 PM and 3 PM. Make sure you bring clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty as well as lunch and lots of water. For questions, email Alex at azhang@mevoearth.org or call 917-456-2826.
