August 25: Ramapo Res Clean-Up

We will once again be participating in one of our classic clean-ups in the Ramapo Valley County Reservation. When hiking trails are used frequently, they eventually become littered with bottles, wrappers and juice packs used by people hiking these trails. Unfortunately, this means that the garbage on the trails accumulate and the serene and clean environment in the area is ruined by splotches of garbage. Have No Fear, MEVO has a Solution! On August 25th at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah, NJ, MEVO is planning a trash clean-up to restore the area around orange trail as well as the upper lake. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah, NJ at 10 AM on Saturday August 25th. All proper supplies will be provided, but volunteers are advised to bring lots of water, food, and of course clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty! To RSVP for this event, simply send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line of “Ramapo Res Clean-Up”. You can also RSVP on Facebook.

August 19: Invasive Plant Species Removal

Come and join MEVO as we spend our day removing invasive plants at our favorite place, the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah! If you’ve volunteered with us before, you’d be well aware that invasive plant species have been a huge problem in New Jersey, even in our own backyard. Invasive species such as the Garlic Mustard plant, which is native to only Europe, prevent native species from growing, causing a detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. If these plants are not removed, the balance of an ecosystem, such as that of the Ramapo Reservation, can become entirely thrown off. We need your help to prevent this from happening. Volunteers will meet at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation at 10 AM and we should be completed with the work between 2 PM and 3 PM. Make sure you bring clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty as well as lots of water. We hope to see you all there! To RSVP for this event send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Invasive Plant Species Removal.” You can also RSVP on Facebook.

August 15: Stag Hill Community Restoration

Over the past couple of years, one of MEVO Earth Crew’s primary clean-up locations has been Stag Hill Road in Mahwah, NJ, a beautiful mountainous area of our municipality that, regardless of how many times we return or how many bags of garbage we fill, always seems to have trash waiting for us. For several decades, Stag Hill Road was used as an illegal dumping grounds, and the damage that this pollution inflicted upon this once pristine natural region of our town has left a massive environmental scar that many believe cannot be mended. However, we here at MEVO will be taking the first steps towards proving those people wrong! On Wednesday, August 15th, MEVO will be taking on our biggest project ever – a 100 volunteer trash clean-up of Stag Hill Road – but we need all of your help to accomplish this goal! We truly believe that with the aid of all you MEVO Earth Crew volunteers, as well as that of our friends at the Jewish Community Center, we can take a successful leap towards finally restoring the Stag Hill community. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah, NJ at 10 AM, and carpool to Stag Hill from there. We should be finished between 3 PM and 4 PM. As usual, please remember to wear strong shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, as well as lots of water! Restoring Stag Hill has been a goal of MEVO ever since our first clean-up there, but remember, we can’t achieve it without all of you! To RSVP for this event send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Stag Hill Community Restoration Effort.” You can also RSVP through Facebook.

August 11: Graduates Grand Goodbye

I’m sure you all know by now that it truly wouldn’t be a MEVO month without a hike, but unfortunately for some of our most beloved staff, this will be the last one for them. At the end of this summer the MEVO Earth Crew team will be losing our fantastic group of summer interns who’ve helped us with so much these past few months, and we wanted to give them all the awesome send-off that they deserve! There will be hiking, swimming, food and of course tons of fun for everyone, so come join us at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah at 11 AM as we say goodbye to these amazing members of the MEVO family! Please remember to bring lots of water, strong shoes for hiking and of course a bathing suit if you want to swim. We’re going to have such a great time! To RSVP for this events, send an email to mevovolunteers@mevoearth.org with your name, age, phone number and the subject line “Hike of the Month.” You can also RSVP through Facebook.

August 5: Catherine Ave Clean-Up

For this upcoming Sunday, August 5th, MEVO Earth Crew volunteers will now be participating in a local clean-up right here in Mahwah! Originally, we were scheduled to plant trees at Veterans Memorial Park in the center of town, but we’ve decided to have this event at a later date. We apologize to the volunteers who were really looking forward to this event but we simply decided that this clean-up which will be occurring at Catherine Ave. in Mahwah was something urgent that we needed to take care of as soon as possible. Volunteers will still be meeting at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah at 10 AM and we will carpool to Catherine Ave. from there. June 30: Darlington Schoolhouse Restoration

As the future headquarters of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, the Darlington Schoolhouse, a beloved historic landmark in our municipality, has been undergoing many renovations to transform it into the public face of the Trail Conference. Since MEVO’s inception, the NYNJTC has been one of our closest partners, so this month we are going to help them with the effort! Volunteers will be working around the building to remove some weeds and other debris in the area, and, with the help of the Mahwah DPW, volunteers will be removing evergreen trees from the front of the building and transplanting them at Winters Pond across town. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah, NJ at 10 AM and we will carpool to the schoolhouse from there. We should be completed with our work at about 3 PM.
