Besides the delicious honey they give us, Honey Bees play an essential role in our food production. Without their pollenating abilities, we wouldn’t have over 150 different kinds of foods, ranging from tomatoes to almonds. In order to keep the bee population thriving, MEVO maintains over 16 healthy hives across Bergen County. We have a team of volunteer beekeepers that manage all of our hives all over Bergen County and get free honey for doing it. To help out with the hives, learn how to beekeep, and to become a volunteer beekeeper please email our Apiary Manager, Kristen Andrada at kristena@mahwahevo.org. No additional experience required.

Bee swarm removal

Got Honey Bees? And don’t want them? Well have no fear, MEVO is here! We will come remove that honey bee swarm from your home right away and bring it to our educational bee apiary to teach people about the importance of local bee populations. We do bee swarm removal from trees, bushes, sheds, and even inside buildings if the project doesn’t require a lot of demolition. We are also listed on the New Jersey Beekeepers Association Swarm Removal List where you can find other beekeepers interested in removing your swarm. So if you have honey bees and want them removed with grace, beauty, and minimal stings send us an e-mail at ericjfs@mevoearth.org or call us at 201-316-4888 and we will be right there.

Want a hive at your home or not-for-profit organization

MEVO will teach you how to install hives at your home, school, business, or not-for-profit organization and educate you on the equipment you need to install the hives. Depending on your financial need MEVO can do this service for you at a discounted or free rate. However, with private homeowners and for-profit businesses we usually ask for a donation to our organization to support our work in carrying out environmental sustainability projects throughout the region. We will support you in all of the steps in building, installing, and managing successful bee hives for the first year of your hives life and of course keep in touch in future years about how things are going and any questions you may have. If you are interested in getting you own beehives at MEVO then send us an e-mail at ericjfs@mevoearth.org or call us at 201-316-4888.

Where the hives at

We currently raise Honey Bees in two locations in Bergen County, New Jersey: Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ and Stokes Farm in Old Tappan, NJ. With a third location expected in the Spring of 2016 at the MEVO Farm at Campgaw Reservation in Mahwah, NJ.

The Bergen Community College Bee Apiary

Bergen Community College
400 Paramus Road, Paramus NJ 07652

This is the biggest honey bee apiary MEVO currently manages hosting around twelve MEVO Bee Hives as well as several hives from other local beekeepers. The hives are located near our farm in a tranquil and beautiful sunny corner overlooking a small stream where our bees drink water. The hives were originally installed at the farm in 2013 by our summer interns and since then MEVO has been working in companionship with our bees to produce the golden honey you now have. They are very friendly hives and on a sunny day you can sit directly beside them and watch bees go in and out of the entrance to the hive busy collecting pollen and nectar. Being on the BCC campus has huge benefits for our apiary and frequently schools, volunteer groups, summer camps, and aspiring beekeepers come to visit the apiary and learn about the importance of local honey bees. Uniquely all of the hives at our apiary are within several hundred feet of a children’s day care where children play throughout the summer outdoors. It is a beautiful illustration of the peaceful and friendly nature of honey bees as there have been no problems or issues between the bees and the daycare. In fact, every summer we teach an educational summer camp on plants and bees to the children who are there over the summer.

Stokes Farm Hives

Stokes Farm
23 Dewolf Rd, Old Tappan NJ 07675

We currently raise four hives at Stokes Farm in Old Tappan, NJ. Stokes Farm is an historical farm dating back to 1873 and currently owned and managed by Ron Binaghi, Jr. and wife Jeanine Binaghi as well as their son Ron Binaghi III. The family currently farms over 17 acres of land including 40,000 square feet of green house space. They grow everything from delicious tomatoes to various fresh herbs and have their own farm store selling things like freshly baked donuts and seedlings. We installed four hives at their property in 2015 and have big plans of selling lots of honey at their farm store once we get a harvest from our hives. It is awesome to be raising bees at such an historical farm as stokes and supporting their production and pollination of beautiful clean and green produce.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
