New season is near

The trees are green, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming and sustainability is in the air! The 2012 volunteer season is right around the corner. April is almost here! Prepare yourself – to make a difference! Get involved, we need all the help we can get.

Our chance at $10,000

Hey friends! MEVO Farm to Live will be entering the FINAL REYNOLDS CHANGE MAKER GRANT ROUND for a chance at $10,000. We have been working on this grant since September 2011 and already won $1000.00. If we win this final round we will get $10,000 and have all the funding we need to support our farms in Mahwah and Paramus New Jersey. Wish our team luck!

Saturday, October 23: Fall Daffodil Planting with NJBT

Volunteers interested can join us in helping the New Jersey Botanical Gardens with fall daffodil planting. The goal is to cover an entire hill at the garden (affectionately named “Daff Hill”) with flowers. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation at 9:30 a.m. and carpooling to the gardens, which are located in Ringwood, NJ, from there. Bring water and snacks (if you want) and be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty! Saturday, October 2: Trail Restoration with NYNJTC

Once again, M.E.V.O. will be volunteering with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference to help restore damaged hiking trail land. We will be working at the Wanaque Reservoir restoring the Post Brook Trail. Please keep in mind that the work we will be doing is very strenuous, and the physical labor will be very tiring. We will be carpooling to this event to reduce CO2 emissions (fewer cars = less CO2). Please be sure to wear boots, jeans, and clothes you can get dirty. Bring lots of water and lunch, as we will be working well into the day. We will be meeting at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation (a.k.a. “The Res”) parking lot in Mahwah, NJ at 9:00 a.m., and carpool to Wanaque from there.  If you want to lend a helping hand, then send an e-mail to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with your name, age, and phone number.

June 12th: Botanical Gardens Clean-up

Volunteers can come volunteer with M.E.V.O. and participate in an environmental clean-up at the NJ State Botanical Gardens, which is located at Ringwood State Park.

We are going to help clean up the Lilac Gardens from 10:00 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. We will be carpooling to this event to reduce vehicle CO2 emissions. We will meet at 9:00 A.M. at 1024 Ash Drive in Mahwah, NJ to drive to the gardens. If you want to lend a helping hand, send an e-mail to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with “Clean-Up” in the subject. Include your name, age, and phone number. Dress in clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! Boots are recommended.

June 23: Hike of the Month

Volunteers interested can attend the M.E.V.O. hiking trip at Ramapo Valley County Reservation (a.k.a “The Res”) in Mahwah. If you’re looking for some tough trails and truly beautiful vistas, M.E.V.O. hikes are the place to be. The hike will meet in the parking lot at 1:00 p.m. Bring water, some sturdy boots, and clothing appropriate for the weather! Feel free to bring your bathing suits to take a swim!

May 22nd: Bear Mountain Trail Maintaining

On Saturday, May 22nd, M.E.V.O. will be volunteering with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC) in helping to rebuild and repair part of the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain State Park, in Bear Mountain New York. The volunteer work M.E.V.O. does this Saturday will be part of the biggest hiking trail project in the entire country. Our volunteers will help work on the, “Grandaddy,” of hiking trails, the Appalachian Trail, and the experience is a once in a life time chance.

M.E.V.O. is in serious need of tough, strong, and passionate volunteers for the Bear Mountain volunteer work this Saturday. If you haven’t volunteered in the past, this is your chance to really do something good for the world. We will be carrying bridge railing up the trail, surfacing a portion of the trail, and restoring damaged areas around the trail. May 15th: Botanical Gardens Clean-up

We will be carpooling to this event to reduce CO2 emissions by traveling in less vehicles. We will be meeting at 9:00 A.M. at 1024 Ash Drive, Mahwah NJ to carpool to the gardens from there. May 22nd : Trail Maintaining with NYNJTC

M.E.V.O. will be volunteering with The New York New Jersey Trail Conference to help reroute the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain State Park, in Bear Mountain New York. We will be helping with any volunteer work that NYNJTC needs help with. For example this work could include, Stone and rock moving, rehabilitating trails by planting native species of plants and trees, or cutting and clearing trails using cutters and picks. Please keep in mind that the work we will be doing is very strenuous and the physical labor will be tiring. Only come volunteer with M.E.V.O. if you think you can handle a lot of hard work. We will be carpooling to this event to reduce CO2 emissions by traveling in less vehicles. We will be meeting at 1024 Ash Drive Mahwah NJ to carpool to Bear Mountain from there.
