April 24th: Project Porchlight

A VOLUNTEER EVENT YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS!

M.E.V.O. will be working once again with the non-profit organization ONECHANGE in pursuing their mission to replace one normal light bulb in every home in the United States with an Eco-friendly compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). This event will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Mahwah Municipal Building (a.k.a. Town Hall and the Mahwah Senior Center) on Corporate Drive in Mahwah New Jersey.

Did you know…
If every household in the United States replaced one incandescent bulb (traditional light bulb) with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), the reduction in pollution from energy production would be the equivalent of taking 800,000 cars off the road?

Well M.E.V.O. volunteers, this is your chance to help!  Come lend a hand in volunteering for Project Porchlight. During the event, M.E.V.O. volunteers will go in pairs, door to door giving each house a free Eco-friendly light bulb. We needs all the volunteers we can get, because M.E.V.O. and www.onechange.org will be giving an eco-friendly bulb to every house in Mahwah.

If you would like to volunteer for this volunteer event, please fill out the designated information below and e-mail it back to mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org and you will be put on the event roster!

March 20th: Anti-Idling Community Outreach!

On Saturday March 20th, 2010 M.E.V.O.volunteers will be holding up signs and passing out fliers in the center of town, in order to educate and raise awareness to the residents of Mahwah on the effects of vehicle Idling. Volunteers will line the sides of Franklin Turnpike and display signs to passing cars in order to remind drivers of the damage vehicle idling causes to the natural environment. Volunteers will pass out fliers to people passing by in order to educate them on the bad habit and make residents more aware of their actions.

Did you know?
Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine.

Or did you know?
New Jersey has a No-Idling regulation that says, “with limited exceptions no motor vehicle (diesel or gasoline fueled) may have its engine running if stopped for more than three consecutive minutes.”
That is right! Its the LAW! People shouldn’t idle unnecessarily. For the better health of Mahwah residents and to help stop Climate Change.

So what do you say? Do you want to come volunteer and help educate and outreach to residents of Mahwah about a bad habit that they have the power to change? Do you want to help to clean-up, preserve, and protect the environment?

Well then Sign-Up for this event by emailing mevovolunteers@mahwahevo.org with your name, age, and phone number or by signing up on facebook http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=106341136057545&ref=mf and come volunteer with the Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization! We need your help, every voice counts!

Volunteers will gather at the Ramapo Ridge Association Club House on the corner of Ridge Road and Lydia Lane in Mahwah NJ, located in the condominium development next to Ramapo Ridge Middle School.  The event will start at 12:00 PM.

Please invite any friends you can. Every volunteer is needed.
“Turn It Off!” Anti-Idling Campaign!

“Turn It Off” Anti-Idling Campaign

This campaign is aimed to stop unnecessary vehicle idling and educate drivers on the effects of irresponsible vehicle idling.

M.E.V.O. needs as much help as we can get!

All throughout March, M.E.V.O. is organizing “volunteer recruitment sign-ups”, designed to expand the volunteer population of M.E.V.O. and to raise awareness for M.E.V.O.’s newest campaign!

Did you know?

Idling for only 10 seconds uses more gas then it takes to restart the car.

Contrary to popular belief, turning a car on and off will not harm the engine.

In two minutes, an idling car burns enough gas to travel one mile.

Idling can damage engines.

-Engine isn’t at peak operating temperature.

-Fuel doesn’t undergo complete combustion.

-Idling leaves fuel residues that can contaminate engine oil and damage engine parts.

-Excessive idling can allow water to condense in vehicle’s exhaust.

Fuel injected vehicles don’t require idling, unlike carburetor engines of the past.
